How do ETFs work?
An ETF issuer builds a portfolio — often by tracking an index such as the S&P 500 — and lists shares of that portfolio on an exchange. Large institutions can create or redeem ETF shares in exchange for the underlying holdings, which keeps the market price close to the value of what the fund owns. You buy and sell ETF shares through any brokerage account during market hours, just like a stock.
Traders use ETFs to take a view on a whole market, sector or theme in one trade: XLK for technology, KRE for regional banks, TLT for long-term interest rates, GLD for gold. Watching which theme ETFs lead and lag is also a quick read on sector rotation — see the sector heatmap and the sector leaders for the stocks inside them, and ETF breakouts today for the funds breaking out of a chart pattern.
ETF questions
What is an ETF?
An ETF (exchange-traded fund) is a fund that holds a basket of assets — stocks, bonds, commodities or crypto — and trades on a stock exchange like a single stock. One share of SPY, for example, gives you a slice of all 500 companies in the S&P 500.
What is the difference between an ETF and a mutual fund?
ETFs trade all day on an exchange at a market price; mutual funds are bought and sold once a day at the closing net asset value. ETFs usually have lower expense ratios and no minimum investment beyond one share (or a fraction at many brokers).
How do ETFs make money for investors?
Through the price of the fund rising as its holdings rise, and through any dividends or interest the holdings pay, which the ETF passes on as distributions. The fund charges an annual expense ratio that is taken out of its assets.
How do you invest in ETFs?
Open a brokerage account, search the ETF's ticker (for example SPY or VOO for the S&P 500) and buy shares like a stock, with a market or limit order during market hours. Before buying, check what the fund holds, its expense ratio and its average trading volume.
What is a gold ETF?
A fund that tracks the price of gold. GLD (SPDR Gold Shares) holds physical gold bullion in vaults, so its price follows the metal; gold-miner funds such as GDX hold mining stocks instead, which tend to move more than gold itself.
What are the main semiconductor ETFs?
SMH (VanEck Semiconductor ETF) and SOXX (iShares Semiconductor ETF) are the two largest US-listed chip funds. Both hold chip designers, foundries and equipment makers; SOXL and SOXS are daily 3× bull and bear versions for short-term trading.
What is a bank ETF?
A fund that holds bank stocks. KBE spreads across US banks of all sizes, while KRE and IAT focus on regional banks, which are more sensitive to interest rates and local lending.
Are leveraged ETFs safe to hold long term?
They are built for short-term trading. A 3× fund targets three times the index's move each day and resets daily, so in a choppy market it can lose value even if the index ends flat. Read the fund's prospectus before holding one for more than a day.
How is ETF performance measured on this page?
From each fund's closing price in the latest nightly scan: 1D is the day's change, 1M and 3M the price change over the past one and three months, and YTD since the last close of the prior year. Price only — dividends are not included.
