US stock market trading sessions (ET)
| Session | Hours (ET) | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Premarket | 4:00 AM – 9:30 AM | Extended-hours trading on electronic venues. Thinner volume and wider spreads; earnings and overnight news gaps show up here. |
| Regular session | 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM | The NYSE and Nasdaq core session — the opening and closing auctions and most of the day's volume. |
| After-hours | 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM | Extended-hours trading after the close, where most earnings reports land. Liquidity is thin. |

What moves in each session?
Earnings and overnight news set up the premarket gaps — see today's premarket movers. The regular session decides whether those gaps hold (top gainers and losers today, stock market today), and after the 4:00 PM close the next round of earnings hits the after-hours movers.
