Know what every tick is worth before you trade a futures contract. Pick the contract, your direction, entry, stop and target, and see the tick and point value plus the dollar risk, reward and reward-to-risk.

Contract & trade

Micro E-mini S&P 500 (CME): $5.00 per point, 0.25 tick = $1.25 per tick per contract.

Risk & reward

Risk to stop40 ticks · $50.00
Reward to target100 ticks · $125.00
Reward : risk2.50 : 1

Dollar P&L = points moved × point value × contracts. A stop on the wrong side of entry for your direction shows as negative risk — check the side.

How it works

Every futures contract has a multiplier — the dollar value of a 1.0-point move per contract — and a minimum tick. Multiply the two and you have the tick value: the E-mini S&P 500 (ES) moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $12.50, while the Micro E-mini (MES) has the same tick worth $1.25, one tenth the size.

Dollar P&L is points moved × point value × contracts. A 10-point stop on one ES contract risks $500; on MES it risks $50. That is why micros are the usual way to trade index futures with a small account — the chart is identical, the dollar risk per point is a tenth.

The contract values here are the ones StockSetups' own execution and backtest engine uses. Exchanges can change specifications, so confirm with your broker before trading a contract for the first time.

Frequently asked

What is the tick value of ES?

$12.50. ES (E-mini S&P 500) moves in 0.25-point ticks with a $50 multiplier, so one tick is 0.25 × $50 = $12.50 per contract, and one full point is $50.

What is the difference between ES and MES?

Size. MES, the Micro E-mini S&P 500, tracks the same index with a $5 multiplier instead of $50, so each 0.25 tick is $1.25 instead of $12.50.

How do you calculate futures profit?

Profit = (exit − entry) × point value × contracts for a long, and (entry − exit) × point value × contracts for a short. In ticks: ticks moved × tick value × contracts.
