What happens after a stock jumps 10% in a day

More often than not, it lags the market afterward. Across 10,845 cases from Sep 16, 2025 to Sep 18, 2026, US stocks that closed up 10% or more were higher 20 sessions later 36% of the time, with a median return of −7.5%. Only 37% beat the median stock over those 20 sessions — a coin flip would be 50%.

"Higher in 5/20" = closed above the event-day close 5 / 20 sessions later. "Beat median stock" = its 20-session return beat the median US stock's over the same 20 sessions (50% by definition for the baseline row).

Method

  • Universe: US common stocks (no ETFs) that closed at $5 or more with at least $1M average daily dollar volume over the prior 20 sessions.
  • Data: daily bars from Databento, back-adjusted for detected splits. Moves outside −60% / +100% in a day, or a 20-session change outside 0.25×–4×, are dropped as likely split or bad-print artifacts.
  • Measure: the return from the event-day close to the close 5 and 20 sessions later. "Beat the median stock" compares it with the median 20-session return of every stock in the universe from the same day, so a strong or weak market doesn't flatter the result.
  • Limits: one year of one market regime; fixed horizons with no stops, targets or trading costs; and stocks no longer listed at the latest scan are missing — which, if anything, flatters the results. A base rate describes the average case, not your next trade.

Questions

Do stocks go down after a big gain?

Often, in this data. Of 10,845 times a US stock closed up 10% or more in a day (Sep 16, 2025 – Sep 18, 2026), 36% were higher 20 sessions later and the median return was −7.5%. Only 37% beat the median stock over the same 20 sessions.

Do gap-ups keep going?

Not on average. Stocks that opened 5% or more above the prior close were higher 5 sessions later 44% of the time and 20 sessions later 40% of the time (median −4.9%). A base rate isn't a trade signal — the catalyst, the chart and your exit plan decide an individual trade.

Do stocks bounce back after falling 10% in a day?

Usually not within a month, in this data. After closing down 10% or more, 35% were higher 20 sessions later (median −9.1%), and 35% beat the median stock.

Is this investment advice?

No. It's a historical base rate over one year of US market data, measured at fixed horizons from the event-day close, with no trading costs. Past results don't predict future returns.
