Supertrend

An ATR-based trailing line that sits below price in an uptrend and above it in a downtrend, flipping to flag trend changes.

price above line = uptrend
Schematic of a supertrend — illustrative geometry, not a live price chart.

Supertrend plots a single line offset from price by a multiple of ATR. In an uptrend the line trails below price as dynamic support; when price closes below it, Supertrend 'flips' above price and turns bearish. Because it's built on ATR, it adapts to each stock's volatility.

It's popular as a clean, visual trend filter and trailing stop. Like all trend-following tools it whipsaws in choppy, sideways markets, so it pairs best with a strength filter like ADX.

On StockSetups

Supertrend direction is a screener field on StockSetups, so you can require a bullish Supertrend — price above the trailing line — as a trend filter on top of the chart pattern.
